A 42 year old man has been awarded a compensation payment following an injury which he sustained at work. He had been working as a concrete pump operator when the accident occurred.
As part of his job he was required to clean out the pump at the end of each shift. In order to be able to clean it he had to stand on a grill which was placed on a hopper. On this occasion, his foot slipped between the bars of the grill, causing him to fall. He fell sideways, leaving him hanging over the side of the hopper with his ankle still caught in the grill.
He was taken to hospital and there it was discovered that he had sustained a complicated fracture to his left ankle. The doctors also believed that the stress of the accident had accelerated his rheumatoid arthritis.
He made a compensation claim against his employer, on the ground that he had not been provided with a safe working environment. His employer agreed to settle and he received a compensation payment of £55,000.
