Two brothers have been fined recently after an untrained, casual worker was left with brain damage and disfigurement after falling through a roof.

28-year-old Alan Hind from Corrie Common, near Lockerbie, was demolishing a roof in Carlisle when he fell 20ft onto concrete below, leaving him with severe personal injuries; he suffered 16 skull fractures, requiring him to have a titanium plate inserted into his skull, and is now blind in one eye.

Mr Hind has not been able to work since the accident at work  As well as the damage to his brain resulting in memory loss and personality changes, he is also now deaf in one ear and suffered damage to his kidneys.

The two brothers, Eric and Robert Murray, were both trading under separate names and were convicted of breaching health and safety regulations; they had provided no training or safety equipment for Mr Hind to carry out the work and he had had no previous experience of demolition work when he was hired by the brothers.

Robert Murray pleaded guilty to failing to train workers and failing to ensure work was carried out safely. He was fined £8,000 and ordered to pay £4,000 costs. Eric Murray was found guilty of failing to prevent injury to workers and was fined £5,000 and ordered to pay £8,000 costs. He had denied being in charge of the buildings demolition.
