A Thompsons client who works for his local council has won a huge compensation award after he sustained life threatening injuries in an accident at work. He was driving a recycling vehicle which had lifting arms to mechanically lift  bins and tip their contents into the body of the vehicle. The lifting arms were operated by use of handheld controls.

ON the day of this awful accident the weather was extremely cold and the buttons on the control for lifting arms froze.  The gentleman’s employers were aware of this problem and staff were advised to unplug the control when they froze and place them in the cab to defrost.

At the time of the accident our client had removed the buttons due to the freezing but as he went to plug the buttons back in the lifting arms activated and he was crushed against the vehicle.

He sustained horrific life threatening injuries to his intestine which meant he had to be fed through a tube into his stomach was absent from work for just over one year. Although things will never be the same for him he continues to make a good recovery and is now back at work part time.

Anne Marie HarbisonAs a trade union member he was entitled to call on the very best personal injury solicitors from Thompsons Solicitors. His lawyer Anne Marie Harbison immediately raised court proceedings against the council. Given the level of evidence against them the council decided not continue contesting the legal action and settled with our client at a very large 6 figure settlement. It was an amount that pleased both him and Anne Marie.

The gentleman who wants to remain anonymous said “Obviously I wish none of this had ever happened. All I kept thinking about was what was going to happen to me and my family?  I was so worried how I would support them. That’s why I’m so greatful to Thompsons and Anne Marie. She was so professional but also friendly and always took my call and answered my questions. I didn’t realise how important the legal cover with my union membership was but I do now. The level of compensation was huge and as they were my union lawyers I wasn’t charged a single penny. No one took a percentage of my compensation.”

His legal representative from Thompsons Solicitors Anne Marie Harbison commented “This gentleman suffered the most terrible injuries due to the negligence of his bosses. Where Thompsons came in is we were able to help secure him a huge compensation pay-out. That means that despite his injuries both himself and his family are now financially secure. It really was a pleasure to help him and it just shows yet again how important it is to have that specialist personal injury legal cover”
