Was my car affected by Dieselgate?
From 2009, a number of leading motor manufacturers used defeat devices in their vehicles to fabricate emissions readings during checks and testing.
Dieselgate refers to the emissions scandal relating to Volkswagen models and other marques within the VW brand, including Audi, Seat and Skoda fitted with the EA189 engine. However, other manufacturers have now been implicated in the scandal and a number of extremely popular diesel models were fitted with the devices including the Volvo S60, Renault Espace Energy and Jaguar XE.

What happened?
In 2009, a number of high-profile car makers began adding sophisticated software to their engines to defeat emissions testing equipment. The devices detected when a test was taking place and produced lower readings. During real-world driving, the cars emitted much higher emissions.
Hundreds of thousands of vehicles on our roads were affected and there were a number of consequences.
- False claims in advertising – the vehicles had been marketed as producing lower emissions and, as such, consumers were lied to.
- Lower resale value – the price for vehicles affected by the emissions scandal has dropped when compared to vehicles not affected by the use of defeat devices.
- Increased emissions – not only harmful to the environment but to health too. In June 2022, UK government experts found that emissions are likely to increase the risk of developing dementia.
Why could I be owed compensation?
We strongly believe that owners of vehicles affected by the diesel emissions scandal in Scotland should be eligible for compensation due to these suspected reasons:
1. The performance of your vehicle may have reduced.
If the vehicle had to be fixed, or is due to be fixed, the performance of this vehicle will likely have been significantly reduced.
2. The resale value is significantly less.
After widespread knowledge of the scandal, the affected vehicles have become better known, and the value of affected vehicles has decreased.
3. Not as advertised.
The vehicles emission levels as advertised were not representative of the level of pollution the vehicle emitted while on the roads.
